Wuqiangxi Fm

Period:
Neoproterozoic

Age Interval:
Latest Qingbaikouan and earliest Nanhuan (latest Tonian), Qb (59)

Province:
Hunan

Type Locality and Naming

Northwest Hunan. The Wuqiangxi Fm was named by the Precambrian Team of Hunan, Guizhou and Guangxi provinces (region) in 1962, and published in Hunan Stratigraphic Scale in 1964. The naming section is located at Wuqiangxi, Yuanling County, Hunan Province. Upper formation in the Banxi Gr in this location.

Synonym: (五强溪组)

Lithology and Thickness

The naming section is poorly exposed. The most perfect section is found in Yuxikou, Zhijiang County, which consists of four members. First member consists of gray green thick-bedded metamorphosed feldspar quartz sandstone and meta-conglomerate. Second member is gray blasto-tuff and tuffite with metamorphosed sandstone and slate. Third member is gray-green slate, banded slate with minor metamorphosed sandstone. Fourth member is interbedded meta-sandstone with slate. Except Yuxikou, Zhijiang County, only the first and second members are preserved in most area. The lithology changes a lot regionally. Thickness changes a lot from 212 to 3170 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Clayey sandstone

Age

Latest Qingbaikouan and earliest Nanhuan (latest Tonian). According to Gaoyuan Song et al. (2017. New U-Pb age constraints on the upper Banxi Group and synchrony of the Sturtian glaciation in South China. Geoscience Frontiers, 8: 1161-1173; https://doi.org/10.1016/j.gsf.2016.11.012), the deposition of the Wuqiangxi Fm ended at ca. 715 Ma (LA-ICPMS, 714.6 ±5.2 Ma from the top of the Wuqiangxi); just before the Jiangkou Fm (Sturtian) glaciation.
